The spectacular annual Up Helly Aa Viking fire festival has been held in Shetland. Hundred of torchbearers paraded through the streets of Lerwick, before burning a replica Viking galley. It is the biggest procession of its kind in Europe and celebrates the islands' Viking heritage.

In eastern Ukraine both government troops and pro-Russian rebels reported new casualties. Avdiivka, whose population is estimated to be about 22,000, has been left without water and electricity in freezing conditions because of the shelling. Ukrainian officials and aid agencies have warned of a major humanitarian crisis, declaring a state of emergency in the town.
