A resident of Bunol, near Valencia in Spain, pulls back the protective sheeting during the annual Tomatina festival. About 160 tonnes of ripe tomatoes were offloaded from trucks into a crowd of 22,000 revellers for an hour-long battle. The festival was actually inspired by a food fight between local children in 1945.

Sumatran students play outside their classrooms in Gajah village while Mount Sinabung spews volcanic ash into the air in the distance. The volcano erupted in 2010 after lying dormant for four centuries, and has become increasingly active.

A ceasefire came into effect in Colombia between the main leftist rebel group and the government, ending one of the world's longest insurgencies. The final agreement on ending the 52-year war between the Farc and the government will be signed next month. Security forces in Gabon arrested more than 1,000 people during a second day of violence following disputed presidential elections. Protests began after the announcement that President Ali Bongo had been narrowly re-elected in Wednesday's vote.

The Italian coastguard said it co-ordinated the rescue of more than 10,000 people off the coast of Libya. The operation involved vessels from Italy as well as the EU's border agency Frontex and the organisations Proactiva Open Arms and Medecins Sans Frontieres.
