Building a custom Car (撰文: 匪助)
When building a custom car the first thing you want to decide is what type of car you want to build. As the name says it’s a custom car so rules for the most part are extremely subjective. You build what you like. You choose the donor car, you choose the color, you choose the features, you choose everything that will be added to or taken away from your car. You may prefer the classics, like the venerable 57 Chevy Bellaire, or the 49 Merc. There are over 100 years of automotive history to choose from.
There is also another category to choose from if you want to experience a ground up build. For many years Kit Cars have been available to the general public. This allows anyone with the space and mechanical skill to build a custom car from the ground up. Some Kits use a donor car, for it’s chassis, and various other parts, like steering, and suspension. There is , however another class of Kit car that is a true ground up build. One of the most notable companies in this sector of the kit market is Factory Five (http://www.factoryfive.com/) and one of my personal favorites is their 33 Hot Rod (http://www.factoryfive.com/kits/33-hot-rod/)
The 33 Hot Rod comes with nearly everything you’ll need to build your dream car. What makes this car so special in my opinion is the body styling of the classic 30’s roadster , paired with modern underpinnings. This means that you can truly have the best of both worlds. A custom Hot Rod and a daily driver. With modern steering, suspension and braking systems, along with a modern engine and transmission, make this car a perfect choice. All parts are available either new or used. If you wish to complete the experience you can choose a used engine and rebuild it either to its original specifications or you can custom build your engine to suit your personal requirements.
My 33 would likely have a 6 speed manual transmission, coupled to either a Chrysler Hemi V8 crate engine, or perhaps a GM complete crate engine. 350-400 horse power, and a Ford rear axle, or an independent rear end. The exterior color would be a deep candied copper with copper highlights on the custom billet wheels. Interior would be Camel colored leather and all the accents would be chrome. With a car like this the sky is the limit. How would you outfit you 33 Hot Rod? Take a look at what others have done.
