INDIANAPOLIS -- Ahmad Bradshaw scored a 6-yard touchdown with 57 seconds left to give the Giants a 21-17 lead over the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI.
He tried to stop short of the goal line to leave less time for the Patriots to score, but he tumbled in, unable to stop his momentum. The Giants went for two and missed, leaving the Patriots with 57 seconds and a four-point deficit.
The Giants' drive started with a magnificent throw and catch from Eli Manning to Mario Manningham for 38 yards to put the ball at midfield.
After an incompletion, Manning and Manningham connected for 16 yards to put hte ball at the New England 34. Manning then hit Hakeem Nicks for 14 yards to take the ball to the Patriots' 18 as the 2-minute warning hit.
Tom Brady threw his second touchdown pass of the game to give the Patriots a 17-9 lead in the third quarter.
New England rolled down the field in eight plays to go up by eight. The Patriots opened the second half with a 21-yard completion to Chad Ochocinco, longer than any pass play in the first half.
Two plays later they moved to the Giants' 33 with a 17-yard run by BenJarvus Green-Ellis. The drive was capped with a 12-yard TD completion to Aaron Hernandez.
The Giants got within 17-15 on two Lawrence Tynes field goals.
The Giants defense got off the field thanks to some help from Brady, who missed a wide open Wes Welker on second down-and-11 from the Giants' 44, and the receiver failed to make a difficult catch at the 10. The Patriots still converted three first downs and ran nearly four minutes off the clock. The Giants get the ball back down 17-15 with 3:46 left.
Hakeem Nicks has been the Giants best receiver all evening, including two catches on the first field goal drive, but he left the game after a vicious hit by Patriots safety Patrick Chung. The Giants drive halted two plays later, and Tynes made a 38-yard kick.
The Giants defense stepped up by forcing a three-and-out by the Patriots. Justin Tuck sacked Brady on third-and-8 to force a punt, on a drive that saw Jason Pierre-Paul leave with an injury. The second-year defensive end ran off to the sideline and appeared to be OK, but did not return for the third-down play. After a 10-yard return by Blackmon, the Giants started their drive on the Patriots' 48.
The Giants again moved the ball deep into Patriots territory, but failed to take the lead. They had to settle for a 32-yard field go by Tynes.
Nicks returned and made a 17-yard catch on the second play of the drive. He fumbled, but it was recovered by Hynoski.
Eli Manning’s status as a legendary clutch quarterback continues to grow, as does the number of Super Bowl rings in his collection.
Manning led the Giants to their second Super Bowl in four years by engineering a nine-play, 88-yard touchdown drive in the final minutes of Super Bowl XLVI for a 21-17 win over the Patriots.
The Giants did not give the ball back to the Patriots until there was 57 seconds remaining, not enough for Tom Brady to lead a scoring drive of his own.
Brady would advance the ball to their own 49, but a Hail Mary attempt was knocked away and the Giants were Super Bowl champions for the fourth time in their team history. It was their second straight Super Bowl win over the Patriots.
Ahmad Bradshaw capped the winning drive with a 6-yard run. The running back tried to put the brakes on before the goal line to leave the Patriots would even less time, but tumbled into the end zone.
Manning started the drive with a masterful 38-yard throw to Mario Manningham, who tiptoed the sideline for an equally impressive catch. Manning would hit four more passes on the drive, dinking-and-dunking his way down the field before Bradshaw punched it in.
The score gave the Giants their first lead since right before halftime when the Patriots scored a touchdown to go up 10-9. And, after receiving the second half kick, the Patriots once again marched right down the field to go up 17-9.
On the consecutive scoring drives Brady would connect on 15 consecutive passes, and 16 in a row overall, to break Joe Montana’s XXIV of 13 in a row. But Brady will have to settle for a record and not a championship, as he was out dueled again by Manning.
The Patriots took the momentum in the half when they capped a 14-play, 96-yard drive with a four-yard pass from Brady to Danny Woodhead. Brady completed all 10 of his passes on the drive with injured tight end Rob Gronkowski making his first catch of the day on a 20-yard seam route that helped get the Patriots out of the shadow of their end zone.
But it was the Patriots other tight end, Aaron Hernandez, who helped keep the drive moving with four catches. Woodhead had three himself as Brady used short passes to pick apart the Giants defense for the first time all evening.
It was in stark contrast to the Patriots' first offensive drive of the game, which ended after one play when Brady was pressured by Giants defensive end Justin Tuck and forced to the throw the ball away from his own end zone. The referees conferred briefly before agreeing it was intentional grounding, and calling a safety to give the Giants a 2-0 lead.
After the ensuing free kick, the Giants took advantage with a nine-play, 78-yard touchdown drive that put them up 9-0 and gave them early control of the game. The drive was highlighted by a 33-yard run by Ahmad Bradshaw up the sideline. Manning completed five short passes on the drive, as the Patriots emphasized preventing the Giants from hitting deep passes.
But Manning hit five different receivers, Henry Kynoski, D.J. Ware, Bear Pascoe, Hakeem Nicks and finally Victor Cruz on a three-yard slant pass for the score.
On New England's first offensive play, Justin Tuck forced Tom Brady to throw the ball away. The Patriots quarterback was called for intentional grounding and the Giants led 2-0.
Brady had time, but Tuck came late and the Patriots quarterback threw it deep down the middle with no receiver close. It was the second Giants playoff game this season that opened the scoring with a safety. The Falcons forced an intentional grounding on Manning in the NFC Wild Card round to lead 2-0 at MetLife Stadium.
