Your favorite cola beverage may have a cancer causing ingredient.
Two enhanced caramel food colorings include ammonia and compounds that have caused cancer in animals, according to a statement from the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI).
The CSPI has also said the words "caramel coloring" on labels was misleading and should not be allowed.
The influential consumer advocacy group is petitioning the Food & Drug Administration to ban ammonia-containing caramels used in the drinks.
Caramel food coloring is also used in soy sauce, worcestershire sauce, whiskey and other dark drinks.
But leading soft drink companies, including Coca-Cola Co, say the caramel colorings that are used do not cause cancer. Also, The American Beverage Association calls the lobby group's claim a "scare tactic" and said there was no proof that the compounds in food coloring can cause cancer in humans. Experts also say, the cancer found in lab mice were those exposed to extremely high levels of the substance.
The FDA is assessing the CSPI claim, and will decide if any regulation is needed. |
