New Boss isn't same as the old Boss

Hal Steinbrenner's stoic demeanor contrasts sharply with his father's showy, bombastic ways.

Hal Steinbrenner and the Yankees' brain trust no longer have to genuflect in King George's presence

If I walk into Yankee Stadium on Friday afternoon and Bill the Baker is not at his usual seat in the press lounge, I will know for sure that Hal Steinbrenner's Yankees  will not be George Steinbrenner's Yankees.

You may not know who Bill "the Baker" Stimers is, but he is just one of the charitable cases The Boss was famous for taking under his wing. For years, Stimers enjoyed a seat in the press box at the old Yankee Stadium, and when the team moved to its new palace across 161st Street, Bill came with them.

I fully expect Bill to be where he has always been on Friday. Change doesn't happen that quickly, even at Yankee Stadium -- although the fact that not a single Yankees player, not even Derek Jeter, bothered to show up at Bob Sheppard's funeral indicates that things have already started to change.

George Steinbrenner would have insisted that at least some of his players pay respects to the man who announced the names at Yankee Stadium for 57 years, and would have expected his Captain, who lives in the city, to show up.

I fully expect Bill to be where he has always been on Friday. Change doesn't happen that quickly, even at Yankee Stadium.

But anyone who thinks Prince Hal's Yankees will be run the same as Boss George's Yankees is either being willfully disingenuous or hasn't really thought this thing through.

Yes, for the past three years, it has been business as usual in the Bronx. There has been plenty of spending -- remember the $463 million for CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Mark Teixeira in the winter of 2008 -- and there no doubt will be more once Cliff Lee and Carl Crawford become available this winter.

But that isn't because Hal Steinbrenner wanted to run the Yankees just as George had run them.

It's because Hal Steinbrenner -- and Randy Levine and Brian Cashman and the bankers at Goldman Sachs, who have a lot more say than many people realize -- wanted to run the Yankees as if George was still running them. As an insider said to me Wednesday, they were "faking it."

Now that The Boss is dead, there is no need to fake it any longer. Or, as Bob Gutkowski -- the former head of Madison Square Garden who signed the Yankees to their first cable TV deal and worked closely with The Boss on the formation of the YES Network -- put it: "His personality hovered over the team. He was always right in the next room. He's not in the next room anymore."

These are not George Steinbrenner's Yankees anymore, they are Hal Steinbrenner's Yankees, and two men from the same family haven't been this different since Sonny and Michael Corleone. Now, Hal can run the Yankees not the way his father did, but the way he wants to.

This is not to say the Yankees won't be as good as they were, or that they won't spend as much, or will be any less aggressive on the free-agent market. But the fact father and son are so different, fire and ice, ensures that the way the team does business will be different, too.

The changes will not be immediate. As the Yankees head into the second half clinging to a narrow two-game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays, who come into the Stadium on Friday for three games over the weekend, you can bet GM Brian Cashman will be set loose to pursue any trade-deadline deal he thinks is necessary not only to preserve that lead, but carry the Yankees through to November and what they hope will be a second consecutive World Series championship.

And you shouldn't lose any sleep over whether the Yankees will go hard after Lee and Crawford. They will, because they have to. Yankee Stadium 3.0 and the YES Network are a ravenous two-headed beast that must be fed regularly to remain profitable.

From here on in, whoever runs the Yankees and whoever owns them is committed to spending top dollar every year, if only to continue attracting a healthy ticket base and TV audience at the highest prices in professional sports.

But even if what they do remains the same, the way they do it is practically guaranteed to be different.

For one thing, the upcoming contract negotiations for Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte -- and two years hence, Jorge Posada -- just got more contentious. Hal Steinbrenner does not have the same sentimentality or emotional attachment to those players that his father did. It's not in his nature -- and besides, he didn't have all that much interest in the Yankees back in the Core Four's glory days, anyway.

By all accounts, Hal Steinbrenner is an ambivalent, even reluctant, Boss.

As an insider who was privy to organization meetings around the time the Jeter/Mariano/Pettitte/Posada/Joe Torre Yankees were winning the World Series in four out of five seasons told me Wednesday: "The kid was there but he just stared out the window. You could just feel the negative vibe between him and his father. It really took him a long time to assume the mantle."

Part of the reason, of course, was George Steinbrenner's sometimes overbearing personality, which according to some who were there had the same chilling effect on his son that George's own father's bullying personality had on him.

And part of it could be the knowledge that twice in Hal's adult lifetime his father passed him over when choosing a successor, and both times in favor of men who had married into the family -- his sons-in-law Joe Molloy and Steve Swindal, both of whom divorced their way right out of the organization.

In any event, that "kid," now a 40-year-old man, grew up to be a coolly detached personality, the antithesis of his mercurial dad, and may well want to run his father's business in his own very different way. "I'm sure he's going to want to put his own stamp on things," the insider told me. "The question is, what kind of stamp will that be?"

For another thing, we know from his history and practices that for all his periodic harrumphing about fiscal responsibility, George Steinbrenner put no limits on the price he would pay for success.

Although the price tags on Sabathia, Burnett and Teixeira seem to indicate Hal feels the same way, we won't know for sure how far he is willing to go until he has had a year or two to run the team, and manage its finances, without the towering presence of the Old Man in the next room. From this day on, he's no longer running the Yankees as George, but instead of George. And that could make a world of difference.

"Hal is not at all like his father," said another Yankees employee, who requested anonymity for a simple and understandable reason -- he was a favorite of George Steinbrenner's but has no real relationship with Hal. "As emotional as his dad was, Hal's a stoic. You never really know how he feels about you, or what he's thinking."

That means longtime George Steinbrenner cronies -- like Reggie Jackson, who hit his three World Series home runs when Hal Steinbrenner was not yet 8 years old; and Stick Michael, who began his Yankees association five years before The Boss left Cleveland for New York; and yes, even Bill the Baker -- may find the atmosphere at Yankee Stadium a lot chillier now that the son has taken over.

"I think Hal Steinbrenner is a very intelligent young man who will do a good job because I think the winning tradition has been instilled in him," Gutkowski said. "But to lose a personality as powerful as George Steinbrenner's has got to have an impact. Things have got to be different there, simply because these are two such different men. The reality of it is, it's not going to be the same without the presence of George, because it can't be."

I'm sure Bill the Baker will be in his usual spot on Friday night. But like everything else around Yankee Stadium, that situation is subject to change, and probably sooner rather than later.

Rodriguez hits No. 599 in Yankees win

Alex Rodriguez hit the 599th home run of his career, helping the Yankees to a 10-4 win against the Royals tonight at Yankee Stadium. His first attempt at No. 600 ended in an RBI double that drove in the Yankees final run. The Yankees other home run was an inside-the-park homer by Derek Jeter, the second inside-the-park home run of his career.

回复 105# greenback Welcome to the Yankees!
Lance Berkman gave his blessing to be traded to the Yankees and, unless he changes his mind today, the club will add the switch-hitter to their already strong lineup. And the Yankees didn't stop there. They also acquired outfielder Austin Kearns last night from the Indians for a player to be named later. "[Kearns] is an experienced right-handed bat with power," manager Joe Girardi, declining to comment on Berkman. The Yankees also still were trying to obtain a stronger backup infielder to spell Alex Rodriguez before today's 4 p.m. non-waiver trade deadline.

He’s not sure how often he’ll play, but he said it’s his understanding that he might bat second initially.

Yankees trade for Kerry Wood

New York sends player to be named or cash for Tribe closer

ST. PETERSBURG -- The Yankees made one final move to upgrade their bullpen before Saturday's 4 p.m. ET non-waiver Trade Deadline, acquiring right-hander Kerry Wood from the Indians for a player to be named or cash considerations.

Wood, 33, could help the Yankees secure their setup bridge to closer Mariano Rivera, especially now that Joba Chamberlain has lost his firm stranglehold on the eighth-inning duties. The Yankees have also been offering higher-priority innings to Dave Robertson of late.

Wood was activated by the Indians on Saturday from the disabled list after battling a blister issue, and he is 1-4 with a 6.30 ERA in 23 appearances for Cleveland in 2010. The veteran has spent 12 seasons in the Major Leagues, with all but two coming in the uniform of the Cubs.

New York also upgraded its bench and designated hitter spots before Saturday's Deadline, swinging deals to obtain Lance Berkman from the Astros and Austin Kearns from Cleveland.

A-Rod becomes youngest to hit 600 HRs

Alex Rodriguez salutes the crowd after hitting his 600th career home run in the first inning Wednesday against the Toronto Blue Jays.

NEW YORK - After all his struggles to hit his 600th home run, Alex Rodriguez reached the milestone with style.

A-Rod became the youngest player to attain the mighty mark, driving a pitch into Yankee Stadium's Monument Park in center field exactly three years to the day after his 500th homer.

His two-run, first-inning drive off Toronto's Shaun Marcum put New York ahead, and the Yankees coasted to a 5-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on a sweltering Wednesday afternoon to end a three-game losing streak.

A-Rod reached the milestone after a 12-game drought, connecting with a 2-0 pitch over the middle of the plate for his 17th home run of the season. Because Rodriguez homered into Monument Park, a stadium worker could retrieve the ball for him.

A-Rod raised a hand slightly in triumph as he rounded first base, then completed his trot to the roar of the crowd. He was greeted at home plate by Yankees captain Derek Jeter, both of them slapping outstretched hands above their heads.

Rodriguez joined an elite club that includes Barry Bonds (762), Hank Aaron (755), Babe Ruth (714), Willie Mays (660), Ken Griffey Jr. (630) and Sammy Sosa (609).

The rest of the team also came out to greet Rodriguez. After returning to the dugout, then coming out for a curtain call, he kept on receiving congratulations in the Yankees' dugout.

The ball he hit was the 104th specially marked one that had been used for each of his plate appearances since reaching No. 599. The Yankees immediately but commemorative T-shirts on sale at concession stands for $25 each, and one stand behind home plate sold out within two innings.

The milestone homer provided a lift during a trying stretch for the Yankees, who had lost three in a row. Not only have they watched the Tampa Bay Rays pass them for first place in the AL East, off the field they are still mourning the recent loss of owner George Steinbrenner, beloved public-address announcer Bob Sheppard and former manager Ralph Houk.

Despite saying he's been more relaxed than he was when trying for his 500th homer, Rodriguez went just 9 for 46 after homering on July 22, the longest stretch between Nos. 599 and 600 for any of the seven to reach the mark. Mays was next at 21 at-bats, according to STATS LLC. A-Rod went 28 without a home run before 500.

"I know Alex is going to be fine," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said before the game. "Maybe I lead him off one day so he can hit the home run in the first inning and get it over with."

Girardi laughed at his own joke.

"No, I mean, he's our cleanup hitter and he's going to be fine," Girardi said. "And yeah, I mean, he's struggling a little bit. But it's not like all of our hitters have, you know, have not went through struggles."

Rodriguez entered the game 4 for 17 with one home run against Marcum. He received a brief ovation when he came up again in the third inning, then grounded out to shortstop.

The Yankees' slugger turned 35 last Tuesday, putting his home run pace far ahead of the rest. Ruth had been the youngest to hit 600, reaching the mark in 1931 at 36 years, 196 days. The Sultan of Swat did it in fewer games, though — 2,044 to 2,227 for Rodriguez.

In the three years since hitting No. 500, much has changed for him.

During a tumultuous spring training of 2009, Rodriguez admitted to using steroids while playing for the Texas Rangers from 2001-03. He also had major hip surgery that kept him out the first month last year, as the team adjusted to high-profile newcomers CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Mark Teixeira without him.

He returned with a fresh outlook that put the team first, helping lead the Yankees to their first World Series championship since 2000 and reversing a trend of personal playoff failures.

Even though he went homerless in his first 41 at-bats this year and has connected at a much slower rate compared to the rest of his career, the 13-time All-Star has been saying that No. 600 is merely a springboard to better things — mainly helping his team win, but also reaching Bonds' record of 762 home runs.

Being the home run king comes with a tarnished crown, though.

After Bonds eclipsed Aaron's record with his 756th in 2007 amid accusations of steroid use — something Bonds vehemently denies — talk immediately turned to A-Rod, who days earlier had become the fastest to No. 500. He was supposed to be the player who would restore credibility to American sports' most cherished record, but that all changed two years later.

In response to a SportsIllustrated.com report and mounting speculation, A-Rod admitted to using steroids as he hit 156 homers with Texas. He has 255 with the Yankees and 189 with the Seattle Mariners, who picked him No. 1 in 1993 amateur draft.

Rodriguez is among only three players, along with Reggie Jackson and Darrell Evans, to hit 100 home runs for three different teams.

For one of the most scrutinized players in baseball, there was little fanfare in the run-up to No. 600 — perhaps it's Steroid Era fatigue or the fact that Rodriguez became the fourth player to reach the mark in the last 10 years after none in 31 years.

The pursuit of the home run record gets lucrative now. As part of his $275 million, 10-year deal signed after opting out of his contract during the 2007 World Series, Rodriguez can earn up to $30 million more for six milestone homers. The first would be tying Willie Mays. He'd get $6 million more each time for matching Ruth, Aaron and Bonds and breaking the record.

Rodriguez hit No. 100 in August 1998 with Seattle, No. 200 in May 2001 and No. 300 in April 2003 with Texas. His 400th home run came on June 8, 2005, against Milwaukee during his second season with the Yankees.
