Vilès Dorsainvil, one of the men comforting Maler in the photo, is co-founder and executive director of the Haitian Community Help and Support Center in Springfield, Ohio. He said many Haitians have felt humiliated by the ankle monitors authorities are now issuing. Maler has lived in the United States since 2023 and said he left Haiti because he didn’t feel safe, according to photojournalist Carol Guzy. “He was confused,” Dorsainvil said. “He was asking us how long he would need to wear it.
