A photo of a water vole snacking on berries has been chosen as the winner of the BBC's Countryfile annual photography competition. The picture, titled Berry Brunch, taken by Dean Mason, was voted for by viewers and crowned the champion during Sunday evening's episode of the popular BBC One programme.

The death toll in Haiti as a result of Hurricane Matthew - the most powerful Caribbean storm in a decade - soared to more than 400. Some 50 people were reported to have died in the town of Roche-a-Bateau alone. The nearby city of Jeremie saw 80% of its buildings levelled. In Sud province 30,000 homes were destroyed.

The Italian coastguard co-ordinated the rescue of more than 5,600 migrants, in one of the biggest operations in a single day. The migrants had set off from the Libyan coast in nearly 40 boats. According to the International Organization for Migration, some 132,000 migrants have arrived in Italy this year.
