Following last week's Brexit vote in the UK, Prime Minister David Cameron was in Brussels to meet EU leaders where Germany's Angela Merkel said the EU must "respect the result" of the vote.

A gun and bomb attack on Istanbul's Ataturk airport killed more than 40 people and injured many more. Three attackers arrived in a taxi and began firing at the terminal entrance late on Tuesday. Commemorations were held in the UK and France to mark the centenary of the start of the Battle of the Somme in which more than a million men were killed and wounded on all sides. A giant poppy was placed in the centre of the Lochnagar crater, the result of a British attempt to breach German defences using 60,000lb of explosive which sent debris 4,000ft into the air; no-one knows how many were killed.
