The eastern US states of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia declared states of emergency as a huge storm brought heavy snow. With winds of up to 60mph (100km/h), the storm caused severe disruption for commuters across many parts of the region, and authorities in several states advised residents to stay off the roads.

That makes it a big draw not only for the scientists who want to understand better how these mountains work, but also for tourists who want to be amazed by a spectacular show of fire. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned the Netherlands that it would "pay the price" for harming ties after two of his ministers were barred from addressing Turkish expatriates in Rotterdam. The rallies took place ahead of a referendum on whether Turkey's presidency should be granted greater powers. Supporters of President Erdogan protested in front of the Netherlands' consulate in Istanbul.
