A group of 21 schoolgirls who had been kidnapped by the Islamist group Boko Haram in the Nigerian town of Chibok have been reunited with their families. In an emotional ceremony in the capital Abuja, one of the girls said they had survived for 40 days without food and narrowly escaped death at least once.

On Thursday, the Iraqi prime minister Haider al-Abadi announced that the operation to retake the Iraqi city of Mosul from so-called Islamic State militants was progressing faster than planned. Mosul has been in the hands of IS since 2014 and is the militants' last major Iraqi stronghold.

It was described as a "bittersweet moment" as Barack and Michelle Obama appeared on Tuesday for the final state dinner of the US president's time in office. "We saved the best for last," Mr Obama said, as the couple welcomed Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and his wife Agnese Landini to the White House. The event, attended by guests from the worlds of politics, finance and fashion, was one of the largest of Mr Obama's eight years as president.
