Brazilian President Michel Temer was booed as the Paralympic Games opened in Rio de Janeiro to a backdrop of colour and music. The opening ceremony began with American Aaron "Wheelz" Fotheringham, in a wheelchair, jumping from a massive ramp from the Maracana stands and performing a backflip through a giant ring.

A 120m long wooden replica of 1666 London was set ablaze on a platform in the River Thames in London to mark 350 years since the Great Fire. The fire destroyed much of the city, and raged for four days.

Brazil may have been as the host of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, but it's not the only country holding a major sporting competition. Some lesser known Central Asian sports including horseback wrestling, bone throwing and eagle hunting have been on display at the World Nomad Games in Kyrgyzstan. A stuntman was set alight during a performance at the games.

The New York skyline is seen from the US Open tennis tournament after sunset. Serena Williams set a new Grand Slam record of 308 victories with a win over Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan. The American, 34, won 6-2 6-3 to pass Roger Federer in the all-time list of matches won at the tennis majors. Williams was beaten at the semi-final stage of the tournament by Czech 10th seed Karolina Pliskova.
