German Chancellor Angela Merkel tested a pair of virtual reality goggles with US President Barack Obama at the industrial technology trade fair in Hanover. The US president was on a two-day visit to Germany.

Relatives of the 96 football fans who died as a result of a crush in the 1989 Hillsborough disaster in the UK hugged each other as they left court having heard an inquest conclude the victims were unlawfully killed. The jury found the police commander on the day, Ch Supt David Duckenfield, was "responsible for manslaughter by gross negligence" due to a breach of his duty of care.

The solar-powered Solar Impulse landed in Silicon Valley, California, after a three-day flight over the Pacific Ocean from Hawaii. The plane's three-day journey followed an eight-month break to repair its batteries. It is seen here passing over part of San Francisco.

John Singer Sargent's World War One painting Gassed was prepared for transport by staff at the Imperial War Museum in London ahead of its loan to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in the US. The work will be on display in the exhibition World War I and American Art. Sargent painted the aftermath of a mustard gas attack on the Western Front in August 1918, a scene he witnessed during a short visit to the front with the artist Henry Tonks.

Student activists took part in a silent protest after Thailand's election commission filed charges against a group for posting "foul and strong" comments online criticising a military-backed draft constitution.

The former international footballer George Weah announced he would run for president of Liberia for a second time. Mr Weah, who played for teams including Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan and Chelsea, was the highest-ranking African footballer in Fifa's list of greatest players of the 20th Century. Mr Weah belongs to the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) party, whose supporters can be seen here.

Mitsubishi Motors announced it had used fuel consumption tests that broke Japanese rules for the past 25 years. The admission followed last week's revelation that it had falsified fuel economy data for four "minicar" models sold only in Japan.
