A huge blizzard blanketed much of the eastern US in snow, bringing New York and Washington DC to a standstill, affecting some 85 million people. Up to 40in (102cm) settled in parts, paralysing rail and air links and cutting power to 200,000 people. Some found time to enjoy the snow by taking part in a snowball fight in Dupont Circle in Washington.

A number of sperm whales died this week having on beaches. The whale pictured was one of five who were beached on the island of Texel in The Netherlands, while others perished in the UK on beaches at Skegness, Wainfleet and Hunstanton.

A new artwork painted by Banksy on the treatment of people in the Calais camp known as the Jungle was removed from a site in Knightsbridge in London opposite the French embassy. Based on a poster for musical Les Miserables it shows a girl with tears in her eyes as a can of CS gas lies beneath her.

Some areas of the Americas declared a state of emergency following the spread of the Zika virus, an infection that may be linked to thousands of babies being born with underdeveloped brains. Large numbers of the mosquitoes that carry the virus and a lack of any natural immunity are thought to be helping the infection to spread rapidly. Here a municipal health worker fumigates public toilets in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

Taxi drivers blocked a major Paris road in a protest at competition from app-based taxi services including Uber. Dozens of protesting drivers tried to march on to an eight-lane bypass but were pushed back by police using tear gas.
