A woman comforted her sleeping child while waiting with other migrants and refugees at a train station in the southern Serbian town of Presevo. Aid workers sounded alarms over the inadequate shelter from the current freezing temperatures and snowy conditions for the thousands of migrants heading north through Europe. At least 31,000 had arrived in the EU by sea so far this year despite the winter weather, the UN refugee agency said.

Marina Litvinenko spoke to reporters outside the High Court in London following the publication of a report into the murder of her husband, former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko, in 2006. The report said Russian President Vladimir Putin was likely to have signed off the poisoning of Mr Litvinenko with polonium-210 partly because of personal "antagonism" between the pair.
