Aid workers sounded alarms over the inadequate shelter from the current freezing temperatures and snowy conditions for the thousands of migrants heading north through Europe. At least 31,000 had arrived in the EU by sea so far this year despite the winter weather, the UN refugee agency said.

Tsai Ing-wen was elected Taiwan's first female president. In her victory speech, she vowed to preserve the status quo in relations with China, adding Beijing must respect Taiwan's democracy and both sides must ensure there were no provocations.

Marina Litvinenko spoke to reporters outside the High Court in London following the publication of a report into the murder of her husband, former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko, in 2006. The report said Russian President Vladimir Putin was likely to have signed off the poisoning of Mr Litvinenko with polonium-210 partly because of personal "antagonism" between the pair.

An extraordinary tree frog thought to have died out more than a century ago was discovered by biologist Sathyabhama Das Biju in the jungles of north-eastern India. The tadpole's eyes are closer to the top of its head than most - possibly so it can see eggs being dropped into its tree pond at feeding time.
