According to New York Times report, the new Galaxy S 4 to be launched March 14, will have a strong focus on software. An anonymous Samsung employee told the paper that one Eye scrolling a particular software trick will be one of the outstanding features of the new flagship of Samsung. Samsung Galaxy S 4 will track a user’s eyes (Eye Tracking Technology) to determine where to scroll i.e. when a user is browsing through a webpage and reaches the bottom of the current screen; the software will automatically scroll down to reveal the portions which were hidden. It sounds as if reading on smart phones will get much comfortable and easy especially while traveling, walking etc.
This is not an entirely new gesture for Samsung as it has already used its phone’s front-facing camera to track a user’s eyes and keep the screen alive when reading or to adjust the orientation when lying sideways earlier also.
Samsung had filed for a trademark in Europe for the name ‘Eye Scroll‘ in January and later in February in US. The trademark filing described the service as “Computer application software having a feature of sensing eye movements and scrolling displays of mobile devices, namely, mobile phones, smartphones and tablet computers according to eye movements; digital cameras; mobile telephones; smartphones; tablet computers.”
Another trademark filed by Samsung was ‘Eye Pause,‘ but had no description of it in any way but to make a vague guess Eye Pause uses the same tracking technology to pause the video when the user looks away from the screen.
