NEW ORLEANS -- A man who was the pastor at a New Orleans church after
Hurricane Katrina has pleaded guilty to stealing nearly $1 million in
disaster loans payments meant to rebuild the church.
Federal prosecutors said 40-year-old Toris Young used the loan awarded to
Bible Way Baptist Church to pay for personal expenses, including jewelry,
vehicles and clothes.
Young faces a maximum of 10 years in prison following his guilty plea
Thursday to theft of government funds and mail fraud. His sentencing is set
for May 3.
Prosecutors said Young submitted fraudulent invoices and receipts to secure
more than $963,000 in loan proceeds from the Small Business Administration
after the 2005 storm. The church property was vacant with overgrown weeds
when the SBA checked to see how he spent the money.
