Using My Skills for Something Greater
I did not grow up in a missions minded community. I was unaware of the need for Bible translation, let alone the support teams that help make it happen.
Shortly after I got married, my wife and I began talking about missions, but I had no idea what I could do. One fateful evening, I was Googling “IT and missions” and ran across wycliffe.org. I was blown away by all the options for service. I learned that sometimes missionaries just need basic desktop support to print their newsletters, communicate with their partners, and manage day-to-day office functions. Other times they may need someone to troubleshoot by phone when they can’t get their email to work or when they can’t access online resources. Sometimes they need tech support to come alongside to help facilitate a workshop or conference.
My wife and I eventually joined Wycliffe Bible Translators. It took a while to make the transition and develop supporting partnerships, facing many obstacles and much uncertainty. The Lord guided us each step of the way and we didn’t give up. It’s been an exciting journey.
I was assigned to Malaysia as a multi-skilled computer specialist. On arrival, I quickly became the IT department manager. I trained my capable, fast-learning local assistant in desktop support services, leaving me free to develop networking infrastructure and to search for solutions for our future needs and implement training exercises.
Now ten years later, I am a systems administrator serving at JAARS in North Carolina. I support applications, update servers, write scripts, and automate processes. It’s a great job working with some wonderful people.
I didn’t think I had a lot of skills that would make me a good traditional missionary. But my contribution lies in technical, behind-the-scenes work. It’s satisfying to know that my work facilitates Bible translation in a very real, tangible way.
