LONDON (MarketWatch) -- European stock markets were broadly lower in choppy afternoon action on Wednesday, as banks headed south and oil firms tracked oil prices lower. The Stoxx Europe 600 index XX:SXXP -0.48% lost 0.5% to 284.15. Shares French bank BNP Paribas SA FR:BNP -1.88% dropped 3.1%, while Societe Generale SA FR:GLE -2.36% gave up 4.3%. The CAC 40 index FR:PX1 -1.29% slumped 1.5% to 3,640.02. The U.K.'s FTSE 100 index UK:UKX +0.05% shaved off 0.1% to 6,275.18, with shares of BP PLC UK:BP -1.33% down 1.4%. Germany's DAX 30 index DX:DAX -1.36% traded 1.6% lower at 7,544.67.
