MONDAY, MARCH 26, 2012 AT 06:26PM
If the quarter were to end today, the Nasdaq's 19.86% gain would rank as the fourth best first quarter in its history (dating back to 1971). Below we highlight the Nasdaq's first quarter percentage change for every year sorted from best to worst. We also include the index's change for the remaining three quarters of each year.
The best first quarter ever for the Nasdaq came in 1991 when the index gained 29.01%. Over the rest of 1991, the index gained an additional 21.57%. The second best first quarter for the Nasdaq came in 1975, and the index basically traded flat for the rest of that year with a gain of 2.59%. The third and final year in which the Nasdaq saw a bigger first quarter gain than it has this year was 1987. We all know what happened that year.
