forex gurus, how do you handle tax from forex?

I heard that either form 6781 or 988 is OK to claim gains/loss from forex, but 988 is the default. If we want to choose 6781, we need to opt out 988 by an internal memo. Is that true? What is an internal memo? How to do it? Or what are you guys usually do?
