Aloha from space

Hurricane Lane approaches Hawaii on Aug. 22 in an image captured by NASA astronaut Ricky Arnold from the International Space Station. The crew "sends much aloha to everyone there," Arnold tweeted.

Hawaii residents strapped in and forecasters warned of "life-threatening impacts" for the arrival of what could turn out to be the strongest hurricane to hit the islands in a quarter-century.

Helicopter rescue

Residents are rescued from flooding by a navy helicopter in India's southern state of Kerala on Aug. 17.

Torrential downpours began hammering Kerala on Aug. 8, more than two months into the annual monsoon season, setting off devastating floods that left more than 200 people dead and sent more than 800,000 fleeing for dry land.

The right-wing groups Washington 3 Percenters and Patriot Prayer were holding the rally to protest an effort to launch a gun-control initiative that would raise the age in Washington state for people buying semi-automatic rifles.

Biles took the top honor at the event, becoming the first woman to win five all-around titles at the championship. As she competed in Boston, the 21-year-old Olympian wore a pale teal leotard — the same shade that is used as the ribbon color for sexual assault awareness and prevention.
