Jan. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Orange-juice futures fell for the
second straight day on signs that freezing conditions overnight
caused little harm to the crop in Florida, the world’s second-
biggest producer of the fruit.
Groves sustained “minimal damage,” said Rusty Wiygul, the
director of grower affairs at Florida Citrus Mutual, a trade
organization in Lakeland, Florida. Overnight temperatures in
most growing areas averaged 29 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 1.7
Celsius) to 36 degrees, said Dale Mohler, a senior meteorologist
at AccuWeather.
The market “ran up on expectations of cold temperatures
and potential for crop damage,” said Jodi Timmons, a vice
president at Global Commodity Futures LLC in Fort Lauderdale,
Florida. “The temperatures haven’t dipped low enough or with
durations long enough to cause any type of damage.”
Orange-juice futures for March delivery fell 0.1 cent to
$1.4195 a pound at 8:43 a.m. on ICE Futures U.S. in New York.
Earlier, the price dropped as much as 1.8 percent. Yesterday,
the commodity declined 1 percent. |
