Industry loses production incentives, guaranteed prices
The German government announced it would cut subsidies to it’s nearly
$9 billion solar power industry, in hopes of making the industry more
efficient and keeping it from growing too quickly. Under the current
plan, producers of solar power earned up to $0.74 per kilowatt hour
generated, close to twice the market rate. Some lawmakers are asking
for cuts of up to 30%, but the environment ministry has proposed
reductions of closer to 10%.
The
world needs to invest $45 trillion in energy in coming decades, build
some 1,400 nuclear power plants and vastly expand wind power in order
to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, according to an energy study
released Friday.
