WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Slower economic growth is expected for the rest of the year, with public debt and deficits weighing on prospects "on both sides of the Atlantic," said Bart van Ark, chief economist of the Conference Board, on Thursday. The index of leading economic indicators rose 0.4% in May, following no growth in April. Economists polled by MarketWatch had expected the index to gain 0.7%. Five of the 10 indicators that make up the index rose in May, with the largest positive contribution from the interest rate spread. The largest negative contribution came from stock prices |
