July 28 (Bloomberg) -- USEC Inc., the largest supplier of
enriched uranium to U.S. nuclear reactors, fell as much as 48
percent in New York trading after the U.S. Department of Energy
denied a loan guarantee to complete construction of a plant.
The Energy Department cited financial and technical
shortcomings in rejecting the application for the American
Centrifuge Plant in Piketon, Ohio. The agency said USEC should
spend another 12 to 18 months resolving the issues.
USEC said today it won’t complete construction after
investing $1.5 billion in the project. The Bethesda, Maryland-
based company had sought backing for loans valued at $2 billion
for building its uranium enrichment facility.
“We are shocked and disappointed by DOE’s decision,”
Chief Executive Officer John K. Welch said in a statement. “The
American Centrifuge met the original intent of the loan
guarantee program in that it would have used an innovative, but
proven, technology, reduced greenhouse gas emissions and created |
