Case-Shiller 20-city Index came in at 4.61% vs 4% consensus estimate. The next big number to be released at 10AM is Consumer Confidence. My guess is that smart money is trying to gap over the prior resistance at 1120 on the open. This not only causes some big bears to cover who would have set the stop at the June high and also reduces selling pressure from those who were trapped at the top in June. I think the smart money has gotten wind of the fact we are expecting a string of good numbers over the last week and this week.

The alternative scenario is that we are now right at the top of the ascending bearish wedge. The 10AM consumer number will be used as a mean to initiate a massive down move.

I think the morning paper activities will tell which scenario will play out. Yesterday morning, the papers were buying relentlessly prior to 10AM and sure enough the new home sales number came out ahead of consensus estimate. Right now, overnight Globex ES cumulative volume is running at 77% of 9 day average.

On Tuesday, we'll get the Case-Shiller 20-city home price index for May, but more importantly, the Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index for July.
