They can PHYSICALLY shut down majority oil outflow from the region if they deem it necessary.  The reputation damage is one time, but the potential benefit is unimaginable. US in its heart only believes in physical power, not words. Is there any chance China, or any challenger can afford a war with US in the foreseeable future if their oil supply is physically controlled by US? Remember why Japan was forced to attack Pearl Harbor? OIL!!!
