actually there could be more than that, the following is the environment I have for my home office.

1) 4 monitors/3 PCs;
2) two Internet connection: one from Verizon FiOS, one from Comcast;
3) two Routers;
4) two UPS to protect routers, switches;
5) at least one laptop, in case your home loses power, you can trade for 1-2 hr;

in turn of OS, XP is better, if you have vista, better to have at least 2GB memory.
if you need to run large program, a powerful 64-bit PC is better ;-)

all my PCs are average CPU/memory, I'm just fine with it.
