Dell is in the pain of transition. They want to be like IBM, to make up decline in PC revenue by getting into service, server and networking side.
This will be a painful and slow transition. I do see that they are making some progress, however it is not enough to offset the big decline in PC.
The founder and CEO is still young (47 years old), and I would say he got a good track record. He stepped down at 2004, that's when Dell start to go downhill, and came back at 2007.
Given the price, Dell is not a bad value play.
The challenge is margin of PC business is going lower and lower. Lenovo survives based on 2% margin, with expanding revenue. Dell decided not to go into pricing wars, I haven't seen Dell giving huge discount for a while. (Compare to few years ago, Dell has a discount going on every week!) This certainly hurts their revenue.
Is it a value trap or value play depends on how well it manage to transition itself.
haha, I remember my first computer is a Dell bought back in 1998. Pentium 3...and I was playing diablo on it. good old times...
