in current huge ocean of liquidity, central bank's power actually is very limited. Do not ever believe that central bank can save every thing!!
all they can do, through various policy action, is to inject trust into the market. But if there is a stamped happening, central bank can not stop it. same think happen to asian crisis and UK crisis (when uk was kicked out of euro)
In this case, I think HK government did very well in 1997 financial crisis. Big hedge fund sharks succeeded in other area but not in Hong Kong. Gov needs to take very bold and unprecedented actions quickly to stop stampede.
I think if ECB only mentions the nuclear option word at the beginning, shorts will be scared and market can calmed and in the end, nuclear option is not needed. market confidence and psychology can influence fundamentals, Soros' reflexivity theory is about this. of course, Euro still needs to take actions to address its root problems. but saying nuclear options can buy them times to address the root problems.
30's they can not print trillions of dollars, they need gold backed, right? now they can print openly and secretly. whoever CAN print and spend more, lead the world more,
so this process can survive for a longer time than 30's ,right?
