Maybe you are interested in firearms but don’t know where to begin.
In my opinion the best place to start is by educating yourself about the gun laws in your jurisdiction. The laws governing the ownership and use of firearms vary from state to state, and can be very confusing. There are laws governing the type of weapons that can be purchased by citizens, ammunition capacity, in some states certain accessories are banned from use…etc. In my opinion it is essential to understand the laws before you enter the selection and purchase process.
Every state has a website where its firearm laws are posted, or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_laws_in_the_United_States_(by_state) has them all listed by state. It is also important to understand that certain cities may have significantly more restrictive laws governing the purchase and use of firearms.
Another good source for this information is the local NRA or other firearms safety instructor. They tend to keep themselves current on the laws that affect them the most. In some jurisdictions safety courses are mandatory and in my humble opinion a good idea. Any store where guns are sold should be able to direct you to a certified instructor, and should also be able to inform you of the requirements for legally obtaining a firearm in your jurisdiction. In some states a special ID card is necessary and special permits for the purchase of a handgun is also necessary. In others a valid form of ID and no criminal record are all that is necessary. Background checks are required when purchasing a firearm, and are done through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS. Information about NICS can be found on the FBI’s web site: http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/nics/nics
After determining your eligibility to own a firearm you now need to know what type/form that firearm will take. In our next post we will cover the various categories of firearms, and other important information you may want to consider when looking at firearms.
Good Luck!
