"No underlying value remains" in Fannie Mae (FNM) and Freddie Mac (FRE), FBR Capital says as it views the near-quadrupling in the two government-sponsored mortgage giants' stocks in August on speculation of reverse stock splits. Regulators "will not want to create a false sense of value in FNM and FRE shares and will likely shy away from" those splits, FBR writes. The likeliest endgame, firm says, is that FNM and FRE will be spun out of government as mortgage insurers, while most of their portfolios will remain with the government.
