One of the world's most famous steam engines, "Flying Scotsman," is set to return after a decade of restoration and over 80 years since it became the first locomotive to reach 100 miles an hour. Gale force winds have been fanning several fires in the Cape making firefighting extremely difficult. The latest blaze ripped through the mountains above Scarborough and Misty cliffs as it moved towards Kommetjie narrowly missing the residential areas but now threatening Ocean View. Two hundred firefighters with 25 vehicles and five helicopters are on the scene fighting the blaze.

13. People stand near beached sperm whales on Jan. 13, after they became stranded on the Dutch island of Texel the day before. Five sperm whales became stranded on Texel died. Experts said the beached whales had already been badly injured and their chances of survival were poor. Volunteers tried to save them but called off their efforts late in the night because of bad weather and darkness.
