Do a simple calculation. Invest $10,000 in your IRA account. Target 30% per year. So you need to make $3000 this year. There are 52 weeks per year. You only need to make $60 per week to achieve this goal. If you only invest $2000 each time in ultra ETF, 3% move (1.5% move in normal ETF, which happens quite often) will give you $60. Don't be greedy. Set a sell order right after you bought it to take the profit off the table quickly. If you get trapped, use another $2000 for next week. Only invest ETF to make sure it will not go to zero. If commission is a problem, use IB for small account.
If you are afraid that you might be trapped five times in a row, use $1000 each time and set your goal to 15% per year, which is much better than CD already.
