1. I have one friend being laid off early this year and I started to get calls and emails from recruiters since about one month ago. I take it as positive sign for job market.

2. For my family, we are still about the same about daily spending but we are holding off investment on big items such as cars, remodeling house, etc.

2. no deals this time. there were tons of crazy deals 2 months ago. no such deals now. i think many of them have reduced their inventory to a very comfortable level.

1. job growth is going to be very slow, and unemplyoment rate is going to be higher than 9.7%.

2. most of people  that i know only spent necessary " back to schooh " staff for their kids.  
Labor day, most of them wouldn't spend too much money for trip.

1.  I heard that there will be some tech layoffs. Some positions available in biotech and pharma.

2.  I never spend differently in holiday seasons unless there are good deals, so my case is useless here.

1. one friend lost job last december, still not got a new job. probably he is looking for the job with high salary PLUS he was injured during an accident. Other two friends lost this May and started personal business;

I am working in one Unversity, this fiscal year the budgets of different departments are cut 13% ~ 30% respectively. According to expereince in 2000~2003, this is one indicator for economy to touch bottom and start changing better because 2003 our University just started cut budget and spending but stock touched last bottom in 03/2003 (other two bottons were 07/2002 and 10/2002) before bull stock flied in 2003.

2. Our family starts spending more than before since my younger boy goes to public elementary school this year

1. Four of my friends lost their jobs, only one found a new job.

2. We did not change much on spending. I have 2 kids in school, hard to cut budget.

No cutting and no hiring either. I sense everyone is in wait and see mode. I don't believe the global deep recession but a big portion of people will be hurt by the overheating here and there, either the people who are agressive or the people who are conservative.

From Canada:

1. Budget cut is stated in the letter from president, and directly affects our annual training (before we had roughly $4000 per person per year for a 5 day training), however I have not heard ppl around lost job.
2. Nothing changed in personal spending, I think this is more a personal behavior.

1. Experienced technical persons still could find a job which might be not as good as they expected. While some got their new jobs quick, some took longer than expected.
2. People I know always try to spend less than they earn

这个采样范围，请大家注意bias。比如说，中国人干的很多都是IT, finance，accounting，engineering的工作，公司很多都是裁掉了很多un-key function的，比如marketing，sales，legal，purchase，real estate，街上的一些。比如marketing，老美都干这个，我就听说很多找了几个月的都没有找到。还有的就是整个location干掉，或者consolidate

所以job market的趋稳有待进一步观察

I did not hear much layoffs in Bay area in the last 3 months, and if you randomly visit company's website, actually there are some opens now(though not many).

朋友的孩子学建筑设计的，她工作的地方10个人裁掉7个半。于是她可以拿着失业救济去读研究生，出路还不错。建筑行业裁人最多，现在也还没见很快恢复。

我们是一个FORTUNE 500 大公司， 虽然继续亏损，但运营基本稳定下来了，公司正在继续裁人，直道不亏损为止。

我们个人花钱还是比较谨慎，小件可能会多买一些，大件继续 ON HOLDING。
