Cisco Earnings Fall but Beat Expectations; Shares Rise

Cisco Systems reported a steep decline in its quarterly earnings Wednesday, but the results topped analysts' forecasts, boosting its shares in late trading.
The world's biggest manufacturer of routers and switches earned 31 cents a share excluding one-time items in its fiscal fourth quarter on sales of $8.54 billion, compared with 40 cents a share on sales of $10.36 billion in the same period last year.
Analysts who follow Cisco expected the company to turn in a gain of 29 cents a share on revenue of $8.52 billion, according to a consensus from Thomson Reuters.
Cisco shares [CSCO 22.17 -0.27 (-1.2%) ] were up almost 2 percent in extended trading. They closed Wednesday at $22.17, down 1.2 percent. Get after-hour quotes for Cisco Systems here.
Cisco has made an effort to rein in spending, doing to so rather abruptly after sales started declining in October. It froze hiring and said it would cut travel and other costs. Its goal has been to save $1 billion during the fiscal year.
The company aimed to reduce its work force by 1,500 to 2,000 positions in the last half of the fiscal year, through a normal realignment of positions coupled with the hiring freeze. |
