Shares of online Chinese companies are soaring this morning on the news that Youku Inc (ADR)(NYSE:YOKU) has reached a deal to acquire smaller rival Tudou Hldg Ltd (ADR)(NASDAQ:TUDO).
Youku has agreed to pay $1 billion via all stock allotment to the shareholders of Tudou Hldg. Both these companies has reported loss for last year, pinched by rising costs for Internet bandwidth, content and mobile video services.
As per analysts, merging both these companies would a great deal for Youku Inc, since it already hold a one third share of a market, which has been facing severe competition for over more than 450 million Internet users.
Youku currently tops the fragmented Chinese online video market with a 21.8% market share, ahead of Tudou’s 13.7%, according to Internet research firm Analysis International.
Once the deal is completed, the combined entity will be named Youku Tudou Inc, and headed by Youku chairman and CEO Victor Koo. Tudou’s CEO Gary Wang will join the new entity’s board of directors.
After the news, shares of Tudou Hldg Ltd (ADR)(NASDAQ:TUDO) soared 163% to $40.47 after hitting an all-time high of $42.81 earlier in the session. Shares of YOKU also rose 20% to $29.98 on heavy volume.
On the other hand, other stocks within the sector are also gaining momentum with Renren Inc (NYSE:RENN) surging over 4%, E Commerce China Dangdang Inc (ADR)(NYSE:DANG) jumped 5.26% to $6.81, Sohu.com Inc. (NASDAQ:SOHU) gaining over 6%.
SINA Corporation (USA)(NASDAQ:SINA) also climbed 3% after claiming 60% of Weibo’s 250M+ users have registered their real names ahead of the Chinese government’s Friday deadline to do so. Shares have rallied over 14% in the last 2 weeks on hopes that the impact of new Weibo regulations won’t be as bad as once estimated.
