Sterilised QE is already in place as we speak. Operation Twist is doing exactly that: we have the FED buying the long end of the interest curve and selling the short end of the interest curve - resulting in no net increase in Fed's balance sheet. This is also similar to ECB's SNP program whereby it purchases PIIG's bond and sterilises the excess liquidity by auctioning deposits to be held at ECB.
How successful is sterilised QE? Not very IMHO. Until Mario Draghi became the ECB President and started the stealthy ECB QE via the 2 tranches of multi-trillion dollar LTRO, European equity market was underperforming. If we are going to have QE3, my guess is that the word "sterlised" will be quietly dropped. |
